Micro Roaster Features, In a Compact Form
The Gene Cafe CBR 1200 is a commercial gas coffee roaster from Gene Cafe, a brand recognized worldwide. It brings Gene Cafe’s technology and know-how into a professional platform, with batch capacity up to about 2.6 lb.
Designed for small in house roasting cafés, roasteries, and specialty coffee labs focused on quality control and sample roasting, it packs the functionality and ease of operation that modern micro roasters look for into a compact body.
Gas Fired, Semi Hot Air Roasting
The CBR 1200’s standout feature is its semi hot air roasting system, a hybrid approach powered by a gas burner that runs on either LPG or natural gas.
With total heat output rated at about 5,000 kcal, roughly 20,000 BTU per hour, it combines strong heat drive with clean, even heat transfer. You get the punch of a direct flame, and the consistency of hot air, all in one system.
That makes it easy to build a wide range of roast profiles, drive heat through the center of the bean without over scorching the surface, and bring out natural sweetness, acidity, and aroma with clarity.
It can roast up to about 2.6 lb of green coffee per batch, with typical roast times around 12 to 20 minutes, making it a practical fit for daily café production.
Proprietary Agitation and a Glass Drum
To handle batch sizes up to about 2.6 lb, the CBR 1200 uses a spiral agitation blade inside the drum. Its unique shape lifts and stirs the beans efficiently, creating consistent airflow patterns throughout the batch.
It is designed to:
- Prevent bean stagnation, a common issue in larger batches
- Keep all beans continuously exposed to hot air for even heat transfer
With this approach, it minimizes roast unevenness and delivers a uniform, clean finish. For roasters who want higher output without compromising quality, it is an agitation system you can rely on.
Gene Cafe’s signature clear, heat resistant glass drum, made from Pyrex, is also featured on the CBR 1200. Without stopping the drum during roasting, you can visually track the entire process in real time, watching green beans move through cinnamon, medium, and dark stages, monitoring expansion, and spotting first crack and second crack as they happen.
Beyond profile tracking and understanding temperature curves, being able to judge how the beans are actually responding in the moment is a major advantage, especially for specialty coffee roasting.

Fully Automated Operation and Safety
The CBR 1200 is designed for fully automated roasting. By setting the roast temperature, from 32 to 482°F, and roast time on the control panel, the machine handles everything from automatic ignition to roasting and cooling.
Based on the selected settings, the built in computer automatically controls gas output and follows the target roast profile. Once roasting is complete, it transitions smoothly into the cooling program.
Forced cooling with room temperature air, taking typically around 8 to 10 minutes, quickly stops further roast development from residual heat. This helps prevent overshooting and ensures the roast finishes exactly at the intended level.
A full range of safety features expected of commercial equipment is also built in, making it a reliable choice for daily operation.
Easy Maintenance
During roasting, large amounts of chaff, or silver skin, are released. Removing it from the drum as quickly as possible is essential to prevent negative impact on flavor.
The CBR 1200 uses an external cyclone chaff collector that is separate from the roaster itself. Powerful suction pulls chaff out of the drum immediately during roasting, separating and collecting it in the cyclone.
This design helps to:
- Prevent chaff from scorching inside the drum, which can cause off flavors and smoky notes
- Simplify daily maintenance, since you only need to periodically empty the collected chaff
The result is a clean, easy to manage roasting environment that supports consistent quality.
4 Reasons Professionals Choose It
- Gas fired semi hot air roasting with a 2.6 lb batch size: Combines the power of direct flame with the evenness of hot air, supporting a wide range of roasts from specialty single origins to blends.
- High visibility Pyrex drum: Bean color, expansion, and first and second crack can be checked intuitively, allowing you to evaluate roasts through both data and hands on observation.
- Repeatability through USB profile management: By logging temperature, time, and heat output, it is well suited for roasteries and cafés that want consistent, repeatable results.
- Compact commercial class design: Ideal for cafés and small roasters that do not need a full size industrial machine, but still want a serious in house roasting setup

3 Key Benefits
Consistent In House Roasting Quality
By logging data and reproducing roast profiles, you can move beyond intuition and keep your brand’s flavor consistent day after day.
Integrated Roasting and Brewing Design
By roasting and brewing on site, you can tell a clear story of “this cup, from this café.”
Supports Small Batch, High Variety Roasting
A batch size of about 17.6 to 24.7 oz is well suited for cafés that want to offer a finely tuned lineup, such as multiple single origins or seasonal blends.
Easy to Balance Your Setup
By leveraging the advantages of gas firing while keeping the size in the 1.2 kg class, it strikes a practical balance between performance and installation and upfront costs.
