Commercial Power, Without the Overkill

The Gene Cafe VRP 500 is a capable electric coffee roaster developed by Gene Cafe, the brand behind the widely respected CBR 101 home roaster. Building on that proven platform, it is designed for prosumers, enthusiasts with professional level expectations, as well as small cafés and sample roasting.

With a recommended batch size of about 17.6 oz, and a maximum of about 24.7 oz, it hits a sweet spot. It is a great fit for those who have outgrown typical home roasters, but do not want to jump straight to a 2.2 lb plus commercial roaster.

USB Roast Control

The roaster comes with a built in USB port, so you can connect it to a PC and use dedicated software.

This lets you visualize and log key roast parameters in real time, including time, temperatures such as bean temperature and exhaust temperature, and heater output.

You can save the recorded data as a roast profile, then load it later to reproduce the same roast, fine tune the profile and try again, or share and compare profiles with other users.

With the VRP 500 and a PC, roasting moves beyond intuition and handwritten notes, becoming a more scientific and repeatable process.

This is especially valuable for sample roasting and quality control, where you want consistent flavor across different origins and processing methods, and for cafés that make in house roasting a core part of their offering.

Powerful electric heater and stirring paddle system

The VRP 500 is an electric coffee roaster that requires no gas setup. It runs on 200 to 240 V AC and uses a 2.2 kW heater, delivering plenty of heat even at the recommended batch size of about 17.6 oz.

For roasting, it uses an agitator mixing system. A rotating agitator inside the drum continuously stirs the beans, helping heat distribute evenly throughout the batch. This improves roast consistency even with larger loads, roughly 17.6 to 24.7 oz.

Because it is electric, it is easy to install in cafés or tenant spaces where open flame or gas handling is difficult. It lowers the hurdles for ventilation and safety requirements, while still supporting serious, professional level roasting.

Rugged Build, Dedicated Cyclone

The unit weighs about 64 lbs, a clear sign of a design focused on rigidity and stability.

It also comes with a separate cyclone chaff collector, about 31.5 inches tall, installed independently from the roaster itself. During roasting, chaff is pulled out quickly by a powerful fan and collected in the cyclone.

This reduces the chance of chaff lingering in the drum and scorching, which can create off flavors or smoky notes, making it easier to aim for a cleaner cup. Cleanup is simple, too. Just empty the cyclone.

The Sweet Spot Batch Size

The VRP 500 hits a sweet spot, with a recommended batch size of about 17.6 oz, a minimum of about 10.6 oz, and a maximum of about 24.7 oz. It is ideal for the space between home roasters, where you quickly run short, and machines over 2.2 lb, where space, cost, power requirements, and ventilation become real hurdles. For small cafés and micro roasters that want to take in house roasting seriously, it is simply the right size.

Run a few batches a day and you can keep both retail beans and café service stocked with fresh roast. It is also large enough to serve as a sample roaster when you bring in new green coffee, giving you the flexibility to test profiles and handle production roasting on the same machine.

4 Reasons Professionals Choose It

  • USB connection with PC support: It lets you track and control roasts with data and graphs, making it ideal for sample roasting and quality control.
  • Electric roaster with an agitator system: Easy to install where gas is not an option, and designed to keep roasts even as batch sizes grow.
  • A practical 17.6 oz batch size: A sweet spot capacity for small cafés and micro roasters.
  • A dedicated cyclone for cleaner roasting: It helps prevent chaff from scorching, reduces unwanted flavor impact, and makes cleanup simple.

3 Key Benefits

Better repeatability in flavor

By logging time, temperature, and heat level, and saving them as roast profiles, it becomes much easier to reproduce the same taste from batch to batch, strengthening consistency as a brand.

Built for Small Batches and Variety

By running multiple 17.6 oz batches, you can build a flexible lineup of single origins and blends.

Low Barrier to Commercial Roasting

With an electric design and a relatively compact footprint, it is easy to add to an existing café space. It makes the step up to in house roasting realistic at a manageable cost.
